The Space Between Sessions Is Where the Work Happens

Most coaching relationships are one hour a week. Sometimes less.

That leaves 167 hours where the real conditions of your life are present and your coach isn't. The conversation on Thursday doesn't help you when your partner says something that lands wrong on Sunday.

What most men do between sessions

Nothing deliberate. Life happens, patterns play out, and then you reconstruct the week from memory on Thursday. Your coach gets the edited version — the parts you remember, filtered through how you're feeling right now.

This isn't a failure of effort. It's structural. The insight that happened at 11pm on Tuesday is gone by the time you're sitting across from your coach.

What between-sessions practice actually looks like

It doesn't mean journaling for an hour every night. That's not sustainable, and it misses the point.

The useful practice is shorter and more specific. After a moment where you felt something strongly — a reaction you didn't understand, a conversation that left you off-balance — spend five minutes with it before it evaporates. What actually happened? What did you feel? What's underneath that?

Not to resolve it. Just to notice it and name it.

The naming is the work. Once something has a name, you can bring it to your coach accurately instead of approximately.

The carry problem

Coaching is pattern work. Your coach is tracking themes across weeks, sometimes months.

Arrive at a session having done no processing, and your coach is working with thin material. Arrive having sat with the week — even briefly — and the session moves faster and goes deeper.

The goal isn't to come in with answers. It's to come in with better questions.

What Hey Coach is built for

Hey Coach is a private space to do this work between sessions — specifically for men.

At the end of a Mirror or Grow session, you can send a summary to your coach. They walk into the next session knowing what surfaced. The conversation starts further in.

On privacy

Hey Coach is stateless. No accounts. No conversation data stored on our servers. What you say stays on your device.

That matters for this kind of work. The practice only works if it's honest, and honesty requires privacy.
